Comic Books and Faith - Green Lantern and Prayer

In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power... Green Lantern's light!

Catchy oath, huh? If you don't know this oath, read on and see how it relates to our faith.

If you haven’t seen The Green Lantern movie or read any of the comics, the above is the Green Lantern’s Oath. The purpose of the oath serves as a prayer, or mantra, with the intention of helping the Green Lantern Corps (think of them as an intergalactic police force) focus on the task at hand. The powers of the Green Lanterns come from their rings. In order to wield their rings, they must have extraordinary willpower and the power is only limited by the imagination of the wielder. Some of the things the Green Lanterns can do are generate force fields, generate beams of lights of various intensities, and flight. The oath is recited as a Green Lantern heads into battle to help them focus their willpower. In the same right we have our own “Green Lantern Oath”, the Sign of the Cross. When we trace the Sign of the Cross, we focus and place ourselves in the presence of the Lord, our God.  It is in the presence of our God where we find strength to overcome trials, peace in uncertainty, and joy in what the Lord has done for us. So the next time something great happens or you find yourself on your knees because of trials, you’re in the perfect position to pray. Trace the Sign of the Cross, trust in God’s will and through His power and might He will sustain you.
